Health & Hygiene

Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

Hmm, k what’s health and hygiene anyway?… i’m trying to learn bout this  in upcoming days. Well,i’ve to join formative research workshop in Brastagi next week for 4 days. Thank God it will be held in Mikie Hotel&Resort at Brastagi. It’s a nice hotel with a great view plus nice bedroom.hue he he… ya iyalah secara semalemnya -the cheapest -900rb(sinting juga!) .;.

The goals of this workshop is to enable me(as participant) to conduct focus group discussion regarding health&hygiene issue in my local office(which is Aceh). Currently, there are lots of people here in Aceh who’s doesnt really care about sanitation (their main objective is to restart their life, which is acceptable). Well for example, they use such a traditional toilet which can cause diseases for the human itself. I believe most of you aware what kind of toilet i’m talking about…yep it’s WC Cemplung, where people feses plunge into water (river). So they just sit near the river and do that thing or ‘for safety and comfortability’ they build little box.mmm, none of you would like to be seeing do those thing by other people, rite? Me and my team will encourage rural community to change their habit. I saw a boy poop on his backyard and nobody cares, and no one lift the feses up or i mean throw it in a right manner. Isnt it groose?

The other issue is about hand washing with soap. Do you know that there’s a lot of patogen/bacteria which you can not see without microscope if you dont wash your hand before eating and after you get out from toilet. If you have a look, ew! So better start a new habit now,k. Hand Washing with soap will also reduces risk of various other infectious disseases such as ascariasis, typhhoid, parathypoid fever, hepatitis and trachoma.

It’s quite challenging to make behaviour change in the community. I discussed it with several people and they says that they always eating without wash their hand first and they’re doing fine. Maybe if you read this you also saying the same thought, but i’ll say, hey maybe it’s for temporary only, virus able to ‘remind silent’ for a while til it shows it’s reaction. And they always compare that their old-old people years ago whom also dont wash their hand with soap. But dude, we’re living in totally different world nowadays. There are lots of people who dont get enough vitamin and nutrient even for teenager in the city, rice quality currently is not as good as years before (because the soil dont provide enough nutrient or in bahasa known as zat ara), pollution, climate changes–it’s all makes different reaction towards our behaviour. Then maybe you (who read my article) will say, what about people who lives on the streeet, beggar, etc…who wont be able to wash their hand not even with water. i will answer it like this, ‘dude, their lifes is hard enough, God will take care of them’. But we,who have better life should aware bout this and spread this issue start with your family.

Hey, i’m not saying that i persuade you for not give care/attention to homeless people. But let’s stay objective :-) If you want to ask me, what will i do with homeless… Mannn, i would help them as best as i can if i could. No one can change community within days and plus not with one man only. We shall start together..
